Britain's finest ensemble! The Nash Ensemble, founded in 1964, is the resident chamber ensemble at London's Wigmore Hall, featuring some of the world's top virtuoso musicians. The Nash Ensemble has recorded and performed over 300 world premieres and many other styles of music in a wide variety of configurations, and is considered one of the finest ensembles in the U.K. The ensemble has recorded over 90 albums for Hyperion and other labels, and has been nominated for the Gramophone Award and BBC Music Magazine Award in the U.K. In 2021, the ensemble won another Gramophone Award in the Contemporary Music category for a collection of works by John Pickard. This album features the string sextets of Tchaikovsky and Korngold. Tchaikovsky's "Memories of Florence" was written in his final years and is the last chamber work he wrote. Korngold's "String Sextet" is a young work, written before he turned 20. Although both have the same compositional structure, they represent contrasting periods in the composers' careers.Tchaikovsky is said to have told his brother Modesto in response to this composition, "It is unimaginably difficult to make the six instruments sound evenly and independently.
