Hyperion's Romantic Piano Concerto series explores the hidden masterpieces of piano concertos in the history of music and the Romantic era. The composer chosen for the "60th Collection," a major milestone in the series, is Théodore Dubois (1837-1924). The soloist is the French prodigy Cédric Tiberghien, making his first appearance in the series. Dubois was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1861, succeeded Saint-Saens as organist at the Madeleine Abbey, and became president of the Paris Conservatory in 1896, demonstrating his outstanding skills as a composer, organist, and educator.From the "Concerto Capriccioso" composed in 1876, just before his 40th birthday, to the "Piano Concerto No. 2" of 1897, reminiscent of the style of Weber and Mendelssohn, to the neo-classical "Suite" completed in 1917, his last year. The concerto-like works for piano and the evolutionary path of the concerto that Du Bois followed are here created by the collaboration of the talents and personalities of Tiberghien and Manze.
