The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, led by Manfred Honeck, continues its rapid march, presenting a remarkable album of excellent recordings from the Reference Recordings series, "Pittsburgh Live! The fifth in the series features Tchaikovsky's "Pathetique" and Dvořák's "Rusalka Fantasy," both recorded live at Pittsburgh's Heinz Hall in April 2015 and now available on SACD, again by the venerable Sound Miller team. The overwhelmingly passionate music produced by Honeck's well-honed sensibility is a must-hear. The first movement is extremely thrilling, with a tempo that swings from slow to fast, from one moment to the next beautifully sung. The second movement is a unique waltz with extreme dynamics of volume and accents. The third movement, which follows, has a freshness and a full sound that bursts with a sense of speed, and the final movement is a fast and furious performance that runs through the piece with great intensity. The coupling is the "Rusalka Fantasy.This series features works jointly arranged by Czech composers Tomáš Ire and Hornecker. The series has featured Janacek's "Jenufa" Suite and R. Strauss' "Elektra Fantasy," taking musical material from the opera of the same name and creating original music. The high expressive abilities of the individual members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra shine through, and a colorful and fantastic world unfolds, allowing the audience to discover new charms in the original music.
