Description:
A storm of high quality sound strikes! Sullivan & Sibelius' "The Tempest" This recording features incidental music by Sullivan and Sibelius based on Shakespeare's play "The Tempest". Sibelius' "The Tempest" has the deep serenity and elegance of his later works, and the music is performed with a high degree of precision, interspersed with the beautiful sonic magic of Sibelius. Sullivan was an English composer who created much dramatic music with playwright William Gilbert in the late 19th century. His masterpiece is "The Mikado," a work set in a fictional Japan that is considered one of the greatest works of English comedy. The Tempest" was premiered at the graduation concert of the Leipzig Conservatory, where Sullivan studied, and was conducted by himself. The performance will be given by Michael Stern, son of Isaac Stern, the greatest violinist of the 20th century and currently active as a conductor, and the Kansas City Symphony, making its first appearance on the Reference Recordings program.After making his debut with the New York Philharmonic, Stern studied under Bernstein and served as assistant conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra before becoming principal conductor of the Saarbrucken Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1996 to 2000.
