A 21-CD boxed set of Philips recital recordings by José Carreras, one of the most remarkable tenors of our time. 21-CD boxed set. Limited edition. The set includes 17 recital CDs of operas, Spanish songs, and popular songs, plus three CDs of excerpts from the complete opera recordings, plus a CD of audio documentaries by John Trunsky. José Carreras was born on December 5, 1946, in Barcelona, Spain, and showed early musical talent, studying at the Barcelona Conservatory at the age of 7. He made his debut at the theater there in 1970 as Flavio in Bellini's "Norma. There she met the soprano Monserrat Cavalier. The two became lifelong friends, and Cavalier remained Carreras' singing partner and mentor, even recording with him. The duet can be heard in an excerpt from the complete opera recording (CD 17 [Love Duet]).A lyric tenor with an expressive sound and supple legato, Carreras quickly made a name for himself and eventually moved into increasingly weighty, dramatic roles. During the recording of Puccini's "Manon Lescaut" in May-June 1987 (excerpts can be heard on CD 19), Carreras became seriously ill. He was diagnosed with leukemia, but after treatment he miraculously recovered and appeared with Pavarotti, Domingo, and Mehta in the famous "Three Tenor Concerts" of 1990. This set celebrates Carreras' wide and varied repertoire. Bel canto and verismo are found in arias and duets by Donizetti, Bellini, Verdi, Mercadante and Ponchielli. (1/2) Universal Music/IMS
