Gourlari ECM's Third Album Explores Musical Connections and Influences Spreading Through the ArtsRussian pianist Anna Gourlari explores musical connections and influences spreading through the arts on this imaginative and finely played album, her third for ECM. Three contemporary pieces are heard here. Alfred Schnittke's Five Aphorisms (1990) draws on impulses from the poetry of his friend Joseph Brodsky. Rodion Sichedrin's Diary - Seven Piano Works (2002), dedicated to Gouralli and inspired by her playing, reflects the life of a pianist and composer. Zwiesprache (1999), lined with memorials to Wolfgang Rihm, is dedicated to musicologists Alfred Schley and Hans Heinrich Eggebrecht, conductor Paul Sacher, and art and sociologist Hermann Wieseler. Interspersed among these series of works are two pieces from plays and films by Gia Cancelli, and Arvo Pärt's early Tintinabli style Variations on the Healing of Arinouska (1977).Gouralli's study of artistic relationships is framed by Bach arrangements from works by Venetian composers Antonio Vivaldi and Alessandro Marcello. Paul Griffiths writes in his liner notes. Anna Gouralli has made these Bach slow movements ours, too, and the new music is cherished and nurtured.
