Description:
The Gortberg Variations are one of the few works that can be played repeatedly. The recording was made live in Basel, and Schiff himself selected several takes from different dates, resulting in a realistic and humanistic music, free from the errors that are common in live recordings, and in the best possible condition, just like a studio recording. As Schiff himself admits, the sound quality has been improved over the old recording, and the piano sound is recorded more vividly. While the improvisational ornaments, which are a prominent feature of Schiff's Bach performances under Malcolm, are inserted here and there in this disc, the Goltberg Variations are presented as pure piano music, without the harpsichord-like effect of raising the octave as in the 7th and 19th variations on the old recording. The Golteberg Variations are presented as pure piano music.It is a performance that is much more mature than the one given 20 years ago, the fruit of Schiff's high awareness of the issues involved, and the work is filled with new life. A pianist is not a servant of the composer, but a re-creator, a second composer, if you will.
