The Zaitlin Trio has been performing for over 18 years at the famous Mezzrow Club in New York City! The trio played 7 standards and 2 originals, a total of 9 songs! The last is a Shorter number that concentrates Zaitlin's versatile expression. The trio was formed after a performance at the San Francisco Jazz Festival in 2001, and at the time of this recording, the trio had been active for over 18 years. The trio, which also includes Buster Williams and Matt Wilson, has grown steadily over the years, and has been playing together wonderfully, although their schedules, including the fact that Zaitlin himself is a psychiatrist, have made it difficult for them to play together. The setting for this album is Mezzrow, a club in Greenwich Village, New York, created by Spike Wilner, who has created such important NYC venues as Smalls and Fat Cat, and is a favorite of Zaitlin's. The club is also a favorite of the band's.While Zaitlin often performs at large festivals, he says that the intimacy created by a great acoustic space, a perfect Steinway piano, and listeners is special for a performer. And it was in this environment that another beautiful performance was created. Overall, the nine pieces were not overly serious, but rather relaxed in a positive sense, while Zaitlin's performance, with its mixture of age and variety that reflects his long career, was as one would expect from a trio with a long history of activity. On Gershwin's "The Man I Love," a well-known standard number, Zaitlin's unique rehearsal of the original song was heard in elegant harmony, while his solo showed an abstract approach. On "I Mean You" by Thelonious Monk, which he says he has loved since he started playing, he showed a wide range of pitches from low to high, based on the twisted melody and swinging rhythm characteristic of Monk's numbers, On the other hand, the three Strayhorn numbers showcased the neat beauty of a ballad and the blues.The two originals, on the other hand, are poetic in expression, and Zaitlin's aesthetic sense, sometimes called the Evans school, is also on full display. And the last is an excellent performance of Wayne Shorter's music. Zaitlin also produced a solo album featuring all of Shorter's music. In that album, he reproduced the atmosphere of Shorter's music with his mysterious harmony and innovative melodies, and his performance here, which thrillingly develops on that foundation and features improvisation by the trio, is a collection of all of Zaitlin's expressions. It is no exaggeration to say that this performance contains all of Zaitlin's expressions. The trio's diverse experience of experimenting with electronic and avant-garde pieces, as well as the depth of their acoustic playing, is concentrated here. This is the fifth album by this trio. Zaitlin himself wrote the liner notes and commentary for each song, and says, "I hope listeners will enjoy this album.
