The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, founded by Daniel Barenboim, celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2019. The orchestra was founded in 1999 in Weimar, Germany, a city associated with Goethe, by young musicians from Israel and Arab countries. The orchestra was founded with the aim of promoting peaceful coexistence in the Middle East and deepening mutual understanding while enhancing each other's musicality. The name of the orchestra is derived from Goethe's "West-Eastern Poems. In this memorable year, the orchestra performed Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 and Schubert's Unfinished Symphony as the main program at the Salzburg Festival with world-renowned pianist Martha Argerich as the soloist. The audience could enjoy the maturity of Argerich and Barenboim, two masters of their craft, as well as the dynamism of the young musicians, which seemed to be hotly pressing into the core of their bodies.The orchestra's concertmaster is Barenboim's son, Michael Barenboim, who is also active as a soloist.
