Australian singer-songwriter Stella Donnelly's new album is complete with the release of her second album, Flood, her first in three and a half years. Australian musician Stella Donnelly will release her second album, Flood, on August 26, 2022, on Secretly Canadian.Following 2019's Beware of the Dogs, Flood is Donnelly's re A record of discovery, it is the product of months of risky experimentation, self-reflection, and many transitions. Like the Banded Stilt on the cover, Donnelly is venturing into uncharted territory, learning how rich she can be as an artist and as an individual. Donnelly birdwatched in the rainforest of Bellingen, Australia, one of the many cities where he lived during the making of the album. I was able to lose the sense of someone else's reaction to me," she says. I could forget that I was a musician and just experience being a tiny being," she says. This reaffirmation of her smallness allowed Donnelly to dig into new creative wells that she did not know existed. She left Bellingen and wrote 43 songs while moving around the country. 'I often wrote songs in strange places. I traveled to Fremantle, Williams, Gildington, Margaret River, Melbourne, and often I didn't know where I was. There's no denying that having closed borders and not being able to contact your family can make you focus on the important parts of your life," she recalls. Writing songs in a new location also created a new approach. Writing songs with band members Jennifer Aslett, George Foster, Jack Gaby, and Marcel Tussie sometimes felt like an experimental play in a kindergarten.Co-producers Anna Laverty and Jake Webb (Methyl Ethyl) created an effortless naturalness in the studio, and Donnelly moved away from writing songs on electric guitar, as she had done in the past, and used the piano to infuse the album's introspective fluidity and vulnerability. Donnelly describes Banded Stilt as "an illusion when viewed in a group, but a singular work of art when viewed alone. Each song in Flood is an art form in itself, but the collective is richly shared by all of Stella Donnelly. Her inner child, her nurturing self, her own nightmares...she pours it all out in this work. It takes an ocean to understand everything she feels. But it is well worth the dive.
