This is a collection of double bass concertos by Johann Matthias Sperger, a composer and one of the leading double bass players of the 18th century. He is credited with having written about 18 double bass concertos, of which the early works Nos. 2-4 are included. These works were written when Sperger was employed as a double bassist in the court orchestra of Duke Joseph Graf von Batyani, the Hungarian archbishop of Pressburg. He treated the double bass in a way that was completely new for the time, with a wide range and cantabile melody reminiscent of Haydn's cello concertos. It is a wonderful piece of music that it is a wonder it has been forgotten until now. The orchestra is not only strings, but also oboes, horns, timpani, trumpets, etc., and sounds heroic. A dulcimer also appears in No. 4. In the middle movement, the soloist's singing is accompanied only by strings, and the writing style is elaborate. This album was recorded in the same hall where Späger first performed these concertos, the \"Mirror Room\" of the Bratislava Palace.A pleasant performance that brings back the surprise of the first performance!
