As a traditional German musician of his time, he was oriented toward both performance and composition, and left behind works in genres ranging from symphonies to instrumental music and opera. The piano concerto on this album was composed for Rudolf Serkin (who later became his daughter-in-law), whom he met and hit it off with in 1922, and was premiered on December 19, 1924 at the Semperoper in Dresden with his brother Fritz conducting and Serkin playing solo. The overall structure is tonal and clear, with influences of Brahms and Reger, and requires a high degree of skill in the solo part, while the orchestral accompaniment is rich in counterpoint. It is said that Peter Zelkin, Rudolf's son, who cherished this piece, recommended the work to Millet, the pianist on this disc, on his sickbed. The other piano pieces were written for Busch's family and friends, and his last work \"Andante espressivo\" is known to have been Peter's favorite encore piece.
