He had a promising musical life as a pianist and composer in Moscow, but left Russia to escape the Russian Revolution that broke out in 1917. For a time he lived in Paris, but he did not fit in with the musical atmosphere of the country and moved to England in 1936, settling in London until his death in 1951 at the age of 70. This album contains three works from his London period. The last piano sonata, the two-movement \"Pastoral,\" and the Violin Sonata No. 3 \"Epica,\" known as Oistrakh's favorite sonata and a memorial to Methunel's brother. And the \"Eight Romances,\" including the world premiere recording, were compiled after the composer's death from more than 100 songs written by Metonel over nearly a quarter of a century, beginning around 1927. These songs, with poems by Pushkin, Lermontov, Eichendorff, and Fyodor Tutchev, all of whom he loved, have a delicate harmony and graceful melody that is reminiscent of Schubert's time.
