The 39th collection includes two cantatas. No. 215, \"Blessed Saxony, praise thy good fortune,\" is a cantata written to honor and welcome the Elector of Saxony, Friedrich August II (August III, King of Poland), when he visited Leipzig, which was under his rule, in October 1734. It celebrates the king's character and qualities without treating him allegorically. Bach is said to have completed this work in three days, and some of the material was adapted from other works, such as the opening chorus of the first piece, which uses lyrics from the cantata \"Hail, O Lord our Father\" (music lost BWV Anh. 11). Bach also later adapted some melodies from this work for the \"Mass in B minor\" and the soprano aria from the seventh piece for the \"Christmas Oratorio. No. 120, \"O God, Men Praise Thee in Secret,\" is a cantata written in 1742, or a little later, for the change of city councillors ceremony in Leipzig. The ceremony, which takes place every year on the Monday after August 24, \"St. Bartholomew's Day,\" is celebrated at St. Nikolai Church in Leipzig, where it was Thomas Cantor's duty to provide the music. During the 27 years that Bach held this position, he contributed a celebratory cantata every year. Therefore, he did not always prepare new works, and it is assumed that this cantata was one of Bach's own favorites, as the three pieces, including the opening aria, were adapted from an earlier work of the same name (BWV 120b), as well as other works.
