These quartets were written while he was teaching at the St. Petersburg Conservatory after serving in World War I. Compared to the rustic No. 1 and No. 2, which were inspired by folk songs, No. 3 and No. 4 have more modern harmony. These are important works in the history of string quartets in the Russian musical world, filling the gap between Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich, but after both No. 3 and No. 4 were premiered in St. Petersburg, they were not performed again until after the composer's death, and No. 4 in particular remains unpublished to this day.
