Perhaps because of the size of the instrument, people tend to believe that double basses lack agility, but this preconception will be dispelled when you hear Romanian double bassist Petr Youga play. In his hands, the instrument sings melodies with ease and lightness, while also producing a deep, contemplative tone. This, of course, requires great technique, but Iuga is a talented musician who, while studying in Romania, caught the eye of Yehudi Menuhin, who sent him to Switzerland to study at the International Menuhin Academy of Music. After studying there, he went on to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Bern and the Conservatoire de Paris, where he was a contrabassist in the Orchestre de chambre de Paris and the Munich Chamber Orchestra, as well as a prizewinner in competitions and a frequent collaborator with orchestras, making him an active chamber musician. On this album, in addition to Weinberg and Levitin's unaccompanied sonatas, she performs Schubert's "Arpeggione Sonata" and Hindemith's sonata with the renowned pianist Oliver Trindle.
