Kurtág, who studied in Budapest and later in Paris with Milhaud and Messiaen, absorbed the avant-garde music of the 1960s and was part of the development of Webern's sound row technique. He remained in his native country after the Hungarian uprising and is still active as a composer. Kurtág made extensive use of the cimbalom, a percussion instrument, in his compositions, which are typical of Hungary and other Central and Eastern European countries. The \"Seven Songs\" and \"In Memory of a Winter Evening\" included here are the first recordings on CD.
