After a long day of travel, a rehearsal was scheduled with a verte mignon piano, an instrument I had never heard of before. There we were to sing Mahler's Lieder with the orchestra, and in addition to the solo from Symphony No. 4, "Heavenly Light," we were to sing a version of it with the original accompaniment recorded by Gustav Mahler himself on the verte piano.(omitted) I got to enjoy the privilege of making music with Gustav Mahler. That special moment will forever remain in my memory and through this recording I will share my experience with others. I must thank Ivan Fischer for suggesting that I perform this "heavenly light" with both orchestra and welte piano. =Christiane Kalk was born in Germany (Bavaria) and made her debut at the Salzburg Festival in 2006, and since then she has performed "The Magic Flute" (Pamina), "The Knight of Roses" (Zoffy), "The Marriage of Figaro" (Susanna and the Countess), "Così fan tutte" (Fiordiligi), "Carmen" ( Micaëla) at the world's most prestigious opera houses, including the MET, Milan, Bavarian State Opera, and Berlin State Opera.
