Raised in a musical family—his father was a pianist and his mother a violinist—he was a prodigy who reportedly composed his first piano piece at the age of four. He performed with an orchestra at age five and won a Quebec provincial scholarship at age seven. He was hailed as the “Mozart of Quebec, Canada” and was highly regarded even by Rachmaninoff, but as he grew older, his fame faded. He eventually succumbed to alcoholism and passed away at the young age of 39. Although he left behind more than 200 works during his lifetime, they remained unorganized, and most were forgotten. However, his works were performed at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, and his beautiful melodies—somewhat reminiscent of Rachmaninoff—and dramatic style gained popularity, leading to a gradual resurgence in the performance of Mathieu’s works.\nAs for Mathieu’s works, Canadian pianist Alain Lefèvre has been performing them for 40 years now and has been dedicated to restoring their reputation. The “Piano Concerto No. 3” included on this album is a work that Mathieu began composing in the fall of 1942, when he was just 13 years old, and completed the following summer. With its beautiful melodies and dramatic style, somewhat reminiscent of Rachmaninoff, the piece gained popularity after being used in the Canadian film *La Forteresse* (1947); however, the original score was lost, and In 2008, George Nicholson discovered the composer’s autograph score, and after spending three years restoring it in collaboration with Alan Lefèvre and others, the work received its world premiere in February 2017. The orchestral version, featuring Lefèvre on piano, has been released by the Analekta label; however, this performance is based on the original version for two pianos. The other two pieces are also astonishingly expressive works written in the 1940s.
