A passionate performance with an excellent sense of rhythm! Prokofiev's Symphonies Nos. 2 & 3 by Jurowski! Vladimir Jurowski is one of the world's hottest conductors, and his first visit to Japan in October 2017 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, where he serves as Principal Conductor, was a big hit. Yurovsky was born in Moscow in 1972 and moved to Germany with his family in 1990 when he was 18 years old. He studied in Dresden and Berlin, and gained international attention for his performance of Rimsky=Korsakov's "A Night in May" at the 1995 Wexford Festival.The following year he began recording with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, of which he has been Principal Conductor since 2007, as well as with the Russian National Orchestra, with whom he has recorded many works from his native Russia. He has released a disc (PTC5186597) with the orchestra that includes Strauss' symphonic poem "Zarathustra Speaks", Mahler's symphonic poem "The Funeral", and symphonic preludes. Prokofiev's Symphony No. 2, written in 1924 and conceived as a grand symphony "made of iron and steel," is impressive for its broad lyrical Russian melody amidst the intense dissonance and mechanical rhythmic complexity of its compound key. In particular, the second movement's theme and six variations, with their song-like melodies and long variations, are truly fascinating. On the other hand, No. 3, written in 1928 and based on material from the opera "Angel of Fire," is a representative work of the avant-garde period, when Prokofiev's charms were most abundant.
