This album celebrates the 150th anniversary of Sibelius' birth and Rattle's 60th birthday. Sibelius was an important part of Rattle's repertoire, and he performed the entire symphony with the BPO during the 2009/10 season, and this recording of Sibelius with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, which he had worked with since 1980, is also a masterpiece of its own value, worthy of being called an early masterpiece.
