R. Strauss's "Life of a Hero" is a very special piece, having been dedicated to the Concertgebouw by Strauss himself while Mengelberg was chief conductor. The concert was held on September 4, 2004, in the midst of a festive atmosphere. The "Life of a Hero" was performed in a festive atmosphere, and it was as if R. Strauss himself had become a part of Jansons. The DVD [RCO4103] to be released at the same time contains the same performance (sound). Incidentally, the jacket image of the RCO label is said to be based on the theme of "childhood memories" that come back to life from toys found in the back of a drawer.
