Description:

The music of Ligeti (1923-2006) is often described as "bizarre. However, these words should not be enough to describe his diverse music. For example, some of his music used in "2001: A Space Odyssey" must have had a strong impact on those who saw the film, even without knowing the composer's name. The string quartets recorded here are not the most well-known of Ligeti's works, but they will convey the full range of the composer's characteristics. The Andante et Allegretto, written early in his career, is a surprisingly melodic work reminiscent of Schoenberg. ［Comment courtesy of Naxos Japan.
