Original stereo recording! Furtwängler's "Die Zauberflote" is now available for the first time on CD in Japan, with an overwhelming sense of realism. The existence of stereo recordings of Furtwängler's "Die Zauberflote" has been rumored for a long time. The sound and audio on these CDs are arranged in the same way. Even though the sound and voices on these CDs are not clearly separated to the right and left, they have an "atmosphere with a sense of space" that is clearly different from genuine monaural or pseudo-stereo (artificially processed monaural recordings with unstable localization). The sound source we use this time is a master tape of an LP (part number FE-24) released in 1984 by Chetra, Italy, and produced by Discos, Milan. This tape was acquired by King Records under the pretense of being a "2-channel stereo recording," but due to a major disturbance the previous year (when an imported LP of La Scala's "Ring" was labeled in stereo), King has released it in mono with a 2-channel mix, assuming that it is also pseudo-stereo (K 19C9409/11).However, this tape, which has been kept in the King Records warehouse for 36 years, is almost identical in sound image and quality to the "stereo presentation" Tahra disc FURT1095 released in 2005! According to the commentary of this Tahra disc, "Unlike previously released CDs by other companies, this is based on tapes personally recorded and kept by Furtwängler's friend, Alfred Kunz" and labeled "certainly in stereo"! However, the Thala disc has a loud noise (dropout in the right channel and ghosting on the left) in the overture (4:31-8). This master tape does not have it. (The tape kept by Mr. Kunz used for the Tarra disc may have been a tape in the provisional editing stage.)(1/2) King International
