This is the best collection of early singles from 1949-1957 by Professor Longhair, a leading blues pianist in New Orleans who influenced Dr. John, Alan Toussaint, and others (2 CDs, 46 tracks in total). The collection includes his first recording of "Mardi Gras in New Orleans" and his biggest hit "Bald Head," as well as "Tipitina," "No Buts - No Maybes," and many other classic tunes. The unique piano style, which mixes blues, rumba, and calypso, and the distinctive vocals are one-of-a-kind. Henry Roland Byrd, a.k.a. Professor Longhair, was born in New Orleans in 1918 and began his career as Professor Longhair in the 1940's. In 1949, he recorded four songs for the first time, including "Mardi Gras in New Orleans," which became his signature tune. In the 50's, he had hits on Atlantic, Ron, and other labels with such classics as "Bald Head," "Tipitina," and "Ball the Wall. He recorded under various names to avoid problems with record contracts.In the 1960s, their activities declined rapidly, and although they had a hit with "Big Chief" in 1964, they almost went into retirement. In 1972, he released his first album, "New Orleans Piano," followed by "Rock 'N' Roll Gumbo" in 1974. In 1975, he appeared on Paul McCartney's boat party and released "Live On The Queen Mary" in 1978. In 1979, he recorded "Crawfish Fiesta" for Alligator, but died in 1980 at the age of 61.
