Record sales began to decline, and their seventh album, *A Kind of Hush*, released that year, was the first since their debut album to fail to go platinum. None of the three singles released from the album made it into the Top 10, but the biggest issues were Karen’s anorexia and Richard’s sleeping pill addiction; in 1975, Karen collapsed on stage, and their planned tour of Japan that year was postponed until 1976. Consequently, starting from this year, they drastically scaled back their concert activities and eventually stopped performing live in 1978. In fact, the Carpenters were a true touring band, performing around 150 concerts annually until 1976. What’s more, it’s alarming to think that they may have performed even more shows than there were venues—as evidenced by the fact that there were several days during their Japan tour when they played two shows in a single day. Even during the scaled-back years of 1977–1978, they still performed about 70 concerts. However, as you can hear on this CD, their performance style often featured musical-style segments interwoven with their hit songs, as well as classical pieces featuring Richard’s piano and strings, Karen’s drum solos, and medleys—resulting in compact, show-style sets. This is a high-quality recording that allows you to fully enjoy a showbiz-oriented side of the Carpenters—one that differs from their studio recordings and could, in a sense, be considered the core of their career.
