Bach composed these three sonatas using the combination of the viola da gamba and harpsichord, instruments that were popular at the time. It can be said that he sought to explore new, richly varied timbres and modes of expression through this combination. The challenge of performing these sonatas on the modern cello and accordion was undertaken by Mari Fujiwara and Janne Rattua of Finland, following a proposal from the Musashino Civic Cultural Hall in 2004. The sound of the cello is warmer than that of the viola da gamba. The accordion was created with the idea of making a compact, portable version of the positive organ. It is close to the human body, breathes like lungs, and reacts sensitively to bodily movements. We hope you will savor the splendor of the harmonies these two instruments can create.
