Description:
Schee & Gewandhaus Orchestra / Mahler's "Resurrection" & "Symphony of a Thousand People" 2011 Live Films Two gorgeous live performances of Mahler's two symphonies by the Gewandhaus Orchestra led by Riccardo Schee, the 19th Kapellmeister since 2005, will be released simultaneously on four different formats. Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection" and Symphony No. 8 "Symphony of a Thousand" were both recorded at the International Mahler Festival held in Leipzig in May 2011 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the composer's death. The live performance of Mahler's symphonies that Schee completed with the RCO during his tenure as chief conductor was recorded in November 2001 for No. 2 and January 2000 for No. 8, so this is the first time in 10 to 11 years that the Mahler symphonies have been re-recorded. The last time they met with the prestigious RCO, which boasts one of the best traditions in Mahler performance, and the content of the recording was very fulfilling. The contents of this concert are to be welcomed with great expectations. The Gewandhaus Orchestra, which dates back to the mid-18th century, has premiered numerous premieres of works by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms, and Bruckner, and has made many recordings. However, surprisingly, there are not so many recordings of Mahler. No. 1: Markevich (live, March 1982) No. 5: Neumann (January 1966 session) No. 6: Neumann (January 1966 session) No. 7: Neumann (May 1968 session), Mazur (September 1982 session) No. 9: Neumann (November 1967 session) No. 10 Adagio: Sebastian (1963 session) "Song of a Wandering Young Man": Lorenz, Br, Mazur (January 1979 session) "Song in Memory of a Lost Child": Lorenz, Br, Mazur (January 1979 session) This live performance of No. 2 and No. 8 by Chailly has never been officially This live performance by Scheie is the first commercial recording of both No. 2 and No. 8 in the Gewandhaus Orchestra's repertoire, and the visual information of the huge orchestra in No. 8 is also very important, making the video release itself very valuable. The jacket design features an oil painting by Neo Rauch (1960-), a world-renowned contemporary German artist. For this project, the Leipzig label Axantus collaborated with Lauf, also from Leipzig, to realize the oil painting "Chorus," which was painted especially for the recording of Symphony No. 8 after Lauf attended a rehearsal in May 2011. The "Chorus" was painted especially for the recording of Symphony No. 8 after Rauof was present at the May 2011 rehearsal. For Symphony No. 2, Rauff's earlier design, entitled "Dawn," was chosen.
