World premiere recording! Michael Haydn's colorful oratorio Michael Haydn was highly acclaimed during his lifetime, although he is now completely overshadowed by his older brother Joseph. In recent years, Michael Haydn's works and his groundbreaking writing style have been rediscovered. The oratorio recorded here was discovered in the Esterházy Music Archive in Budapest, and this is the world premiere recording. This is the fourth release in the "Esterházy Music Collection," which presents the musical heritage of the Esterházy family. The Expedition and Triumph of Emperor Constantine I, written as an oratorio for Lent and first performed in Salzburg in 1762, features the scene of the Emperor Constantine I's victory at the Battle of Milvius Bridge in 312 in the Roman Empire and his conversion to Christianity after receiving a sign from God. The characters of faith, courage, weakness, and theology argue about Christian doctrine and beliefs, and about Constantine's victory. Michael Haydn colorfully expresses this theological controversy with lush music, and his substantial writing style shows the high quality of the court singers and wind players of the time.
