Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5 & "Nutcracker Suite" by Norrington & StuttgartThe "Pathetique" Symphony (93.119), recorded live in 2004, was a great success. The second release is the Symphony No. 5, recorded live in September 2007, and the "Nutcracker" Suite, a session recording made in July 2008. Both are the duo's first performances of this repertoire, and the content is again highly anticipated. The "Pathetique," which was also released on video (93.901), including the pre-concert and rehearsal, provided a great clue to Norrington's Tchaikovsky orientation, and their performance is full of originality and unique charm. First of all, the classical arrangement of the violins with two wings gives a three-dimensional sound.This makes it possible to clearly see the interesting way the first theme changes its form as it enters the main part of the first movement, with the passage being passed from left to right and right to left alternately, involving the first violin, second violin, viola, and cello, as well as the woodwind, which is divided into left and right. The strings also provide a soft and gentle passage. In the second theme, sung softly and dreamily by the strings, the vibrato-free technique comes into its own. The highlight is the middle two movements. The climax of the Andante Cantabile, which begins slowly but gradually builds up and accelerates, and the ecstatic beauty of the waltz that follows prove once again the effectiveness of the "pure tone" technique.
