This is Russian conducting at its finest, the charms of Han Golowanov, remastered on SACD! Limited edition. This is a series of major-label PD (copyright expired) masterpieces remastered from the original sources, and Golovanov appears here, remastered in DSD from LPs made by Gram Plastrest (predecessor of Melodia) of the former Soviet Union. Fans of Golovanov should not be left indifferent, as this is the Tchaikovsky work where Golovanov's true potential can be best demonstrated. The highlight is "1812. Once you get hooked on this performance, everything else will fall short. There is some period noise, but the sound image is clearer, and I was impressed that the brass and percussion fortissimo did not break up the sound. The power and aura that even Gergiev and Svetlanov could not compete with is the ultimate expression of the "charm of Russian conductors. The Tempest" was also full of Golovanov's virtuosity from the very beginning.These dramatic pieces are perfect for Golowanov, who simply sucks you in and moves you with his magic. Rare is the symphonic ballad "Provincial Secretary". This recording is not in Golowanov's discography and is unknown to his fans. It is a work in which Tchaikovsky used a charesta before "The Nutcracker," but it is valuable only because it is a work rarely heard. The cantatas "Moscow" and "1812" are of further documentary significance. The former was recorded in 1948, and the latter in 1952, both during the dark Soviet era, when Stalin was still alive. Composed for the Czar's coronation ceremony, the lyrics of the cantata in which God appears and the Imperial Russian national anthem that appears at the end of "1812" have been altered and replaced with something else, apart from Tchaikovsky's original intention, and this recording is a valuable proof of that. Its value as an edition never to be heard again is immeasurable. King International
