Description:

Philippe Entremont/Columbia Masterworks Complete Recordings of Solo Music. Released in commemoration of Entremont's 85th birthday with the full cooperation of the artist. From Bach to Satie, this 34-CD box set is the first collection of solo recordings by the French piano master, and includes rare Japanese recordings. This 34-CD collector's box contains all of Entremont's solo piano recordings for Sony Classical (and Sony Music in Japan) between 1956 and 1985, including rare Japanese recordings, to celebrate the 85th birthday of the world-renowned French master pianist Philippe Entremont. Each disc is the original LP as first released. Together with the complete set of 19 concerto recordings released in his 80th anniversary year in 2014, the box provides a complete overview of this highly individual master's work in recordings. It is now possible to overview the entirety of this highly individual master's work in recordings. ◎Chopin's masterpiecesAntremont first came to international attention in 1953 when he won the Mulgrit-Ron Piano Competition (now the Ron-Thibault-Crespin Competition), and in the same year he performed the Jolivet "Equatorial Concerto" with the New York Philharmonic and the Liszt No. 1 with the New York Philharmonic. The same year, he performed Jolivet's "Equatorial Concerto" and Liszt's 1stHe also auditioned Entremont during this period and immediately decided to perform with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and through his relationship with Ormandy, a contract with Columbia Records was secured. In 1956, he made his major label debut with the release of a Chopin album (CD1) on Epic, a sub-label of Columbia. This debut disc is a well-balanced collection of Chopin's works, but it also documents Entremont's mastery of the relatively rarely performed Polonaise No. 5 and Tarantella. Ballade No. 3 was re-recorded in stereo on the 1958/59 disc of the complete Ballades (CD3), followed by a second recording of the complete Ballades (CD12) and complete Scherzo (CD13) in 1970, the complete Waltzes (1967), the Polonaises (CD11), and a collection of smaller works from the digital era (CD 31, some of which were recorded in 1975), the album is a testament to Entremont's virtuosity as a Chopin performer. Speaking of French music, we should mention his outstanding work in French music of his own country (CD7, CD14, CD20, CD21, CD30), including Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, Satie, Chabrier, etc. "My Debussy performances are the best of my life," he says. My Debussy playing changes from day to day." My Debussy playing changes from day to day, because there is room for that in Debussy's music, and it is also influenced by my mood of the day. Some days we play Debussy with heroic gusto; other days we play Debussy with restraint. Today, however, it is not required to play Debussy in an impressionistic style. Clean interpretations are in vogue, in which the structure of the work is fully revealed. I don't like that." As Entremont declares, here is a world of French music that is rich in atmosphere while keeping in mind each composer's sense of style. The Satie album (CD30), one of Entremont's biggest sellers in Japan, is also notable for its original European jacket, which is different from the Japanese version. (1/2) Sony Music
