Born in France, Jean-François Essert studied with Perre Mutère, Henriette Puig-Roger, Maria Curcio, and others. He is a French virtuoso who has also taught younger students at the Conservatoire for more than 20 years. Bertrand Chamayou and Jean-Frédéric Nouvellezier also studied with Essert. He has a wide repertoire ranging from Beethoven to Boulez, but he is especially well versed in Spanish music such as Falla and Albéniz, for which he won the first prize at the 1974 International Competition in Jaen, Spain, as well as a special prize for Spanish music performance, and is highly acclaimed. This recording is a collection of six CDs of Spanish works recorded for Warner Classics between 1989 and 1996, and it depicts a world of superb virtuosity and splendor.
