The third stage comprises three releases: the three albums recorded in 1991 in collaboration with Melodiya (consolidated into two titles), and a two-disc live set recreating Tchaikovsky's final concert, given in Osaka in 1993.\n\nThese recordings were made with the most advanced digital equipment of their time. For this reissue, and with the original engineer Fumio Hattori and producer Tomoo Nojima in attendance, Kazushige Yamazaki of FLAIR Mastering Works upconverted the CD masters to 192kHz\/24bit using Victor's proprietary K2 technology. The result honours the musical qualities of the performances while pursuing the sound of the original — a first SACD release worthy of the 90th anniversary. The difference is audible not only on the SACD layer but on the CD layer as well. Note that this disc consolidates two original albums onto a single disc.\n\nThe finale of the \"Pathétique\" is recorded here at Fedoseyev's express wish, on his judgement that the composer's autograph score reads \"Andante\" rather than \"Adagio\". Ever since its release it has been recognised as an important and highly persuasive document. The booklet explains in detail how numerous alterations made by Eduard Nápravník, who conducted the memorial performance after the premiere, led to \"Adagio\" becoming the accepted marking.
