After serving in World War I (1918), Hindemith worked as a viola player and created numerous works, including the one-act opera \"St. Susanna\" (1919-1921). It was written as a trilogy with \"The Murderer, the Woman's Desire\" and \"Nush-nush,\" also in one act, and all of them are rarely performed due to the sexual nature of their content. The \"St. Susanna,\" an atonal piece with sometimes bewitching harmonies, and the humorous \"Nush-Nush,\" originally written as music for a puppet show based on a Burmese tale, are both ambitious works by the young Hindemith. The symphony \"Matisse the Painter\" was written between 1933 and 1934 and preceded the opera of the same name. It is based on Matthias Grunewald, the Renaissance painter known for the Eisenheim Altarpiece, but it also reflects Hindemith's own artistic struggles during the Nazi era.Orsop's conducting gives the entire work a crisp, lively feel and makes the music come alive.
