This disc, recorded in 1985 and the following year with two of the most popular singers of the time, may seem relatively modest among Tennstedt's milestone series of Mahler recordings, but it is a legacy that should be appreciated today as a performance that depicts the traditional concept of \"Hornblower\" in a more multi-layered way. Tennstedt's view of Mahler, which is guided by an independent and free singer, is deeper and more convincing in terms of content. New SACD conversion from the original digital master in Japan, mastered separately on SACD and CD layers, with new commentary and lyrics translation. This is the last of the session recordings of Mahler's complete symphonies made with the London Philharmonic Orchestra since 1977 (recorded in April 1986; only the organ was recorded in October of the same year). This disc was recorded in February 1985 and March of the following year, just before the last session recording of Mahler's complete symphonies with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, which had been in progress since 1977 (April 1986; only the organ was recorded in October of the same year).The recordings were made over two separate sessions, with the engineer for each track being different (Christopher Parker for tracks 1, 5, 8, and 9, and Michael Sheady for the others), although the data on which tracks were recorded and in which year is not known. Tennstedt's interpretation of Mahler's music is consistent here, and the tension is high in many places, but even in the horns, which were not as widely recorded as the symphonies at the time, he is able to create a clear and original interpretation.
