Bach's Suite for Unaccompanied Cello is played by cellist David Stromberg, who studied at the Hamburg University of Music and Drama before furthering his studies at the Stockholm Conservatory. In this performance, he uses a baroque cello and a cello piccolo, and tries to make the most of the unique pronunciation and tone quality of the gut strings. While the tempo is generally relaxed, his steps in the prelude are light, and in the slow movement, he carefully expresses detailed nuances. The improvisational phrasing that can be heard at times is a characteristic of Stromberg, who is fascinated by both ancient and contemporary music.
