To mark the anniversary of a conductor who has stood at the forefront of musical life for more than half a century, above all in the music of J.S. Bach, the hänssler label releases a handsome ten-disc box. Of particular interest is the fact that Rilling himself chose the programme from among his many recordings. Bruckner's Te Deum (formerly 98119) had long been unavailable following the deletion of the original disc, which makes its reissue here especially welcome. In the booklet Rilling comments on his reasons for choosing each work.\n\n* The set opens, inevitably, with J.S. Bach. \"I firmly believe that at least one major work by J.S. Bach has to be included,\" says Rilling. The set contains his St John Passion — which attracted much attention for presenting the complete first version together with the two chorales and three arias used in the second version — as well as a selection of the finest cantatas and motets from his complete Bach edition. It is also a pleasure to find such rarities as Franck's Les Béatitudes and Schubert's Gesang der Geister über den Wassern.\n\n* Another attraction is the wide span of recording dates, from the 1980s to the 2000s. The recordings of the 1980s and 90s offer the mature music-making of the Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart and the Bach-Collegium Stuttgart, his partners in the complete Bach edition, while those from the 2000s find him working with the fiery SWR Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra — an orchestra shaped in part by Norrington — in performances that begin to incorporate newer playing styles. The line-up of soloists is a distinguished one, including Juliane Banse, Annette Dasch, Christian Gerhaher and Matthias Goerne.
