Its disc containing Dvořák's \"American\" Quartet (SU 4038 \/ KKC 5170) won Recording of the Year at the Gramophone Awards 2011. The group is tireless in its advocacy of composers from its homeland, above all Janáček, Haas and Dvořák. Its sixth album for Supraphon is a long-anticipated Smetana coupling.\nSmetana began the String Quartet No. 1 \"From My Life\" around October 1876, after he had lost his hearing, completing it towards the end of the same year. Technical difficulties meant that no one could be found to give the premiere, and it was not until 26 March 1879 that it was tried out at the home of his friend Srb-Debrnov, with Dvořák playing the viola; the first public performance followed three days later. The Second Quartet, written in 1882-83, is a dramatic work full of violent impulse and pathos within a freely handled form. Supraphon's celebrated recording of both quartets by the Smetana Quartet (SU 4003), made in the same Domovina Studio in March 1962, has long been a benchmark — and now, half a century later, a new benchmark has arrived.\n\n\u003cpavel haas quartet profile\u003e Founded in 2002, the quartet studied with members of the Quartetto Italiano, the Mosaïques, Borodin and Amadeus Quartets, as well as with Milan Škampa (formerly of the Smetana Quartet) and Walter Levin (formerly of the LaSalle Quartet). In 2004 it received the Vittorio E. Rimbotti Prize in Florence; in May the following year it won the Prague Spring International Competition, and a month later took first prize at the Paolo Borciani Competition, one of the world's three great string quartet competitions. It first appeared in Japan in 2009. The quartet made its Supraphon debut with quartets by Janáček and Haas (SU 3877) and recorded further works by the same composers in 2007 (SU 3922), followed by Prokofiev (SU 3957) and Dvořák (SU 4038) in 2010.
