Gubaidulina’s Bizarre World\nSofia Gubaidulina, a composer from the former Soviet Union who is well known in Japan. This was a wonderful program featuring a collection of all her string quartet works. Each piece is in a single-movement form and incorporates its own unique, eccentric ideas. No. 1, though a quintessentially Soviet-era work, is a bizarre piece in which the musicians are instructed to move around the stage carrying their chairs while playing, and the final six pages are left to the performers’ improvisation. No. 2 was commissioned by the Sibelius String Quartet, and No. 3 by the Arditti String Quartet; the latter is particularly startling for its obsessive, unconventional style centered on pizzicato. No. 4, commissioned by the Kronos Quartet, is an avant-garde work employing twelve-tone technique and tape. And No. 5, “Reflections on a BACH Theme,” treats the theme from *The Art of Fugue* in a Gubaidulina-esque manner. Each piece is thoroughly worth listening to.
