The ARC Ensemble is dedicated to researching and reviving music that was suppressed under 20th-century totalitarian regimes and has continued to be marginalized ever since; previous releases in the series include “Ben-Haim (CHAN10769),” “Fitelberg (CHAN10877),” “Simon Laks (CHAN10983),” “Kaufman (CHAN20170),” and “Klebanoff (CHAN20231).”\n\nAlbert Hemshi was a Sephardic (Spanish Jewish) composer born in 1898 in Turgutlu, Anatolia (present-day Turkey), who studied in Italy. Jews had lived in Anatolia for over 2,000 years, but following the 1492 expulsion of Jews from Spain and Portugal, Sephardim arrived there, causing the Jewish population to increase significantly. Subsequently, the population plummeted due to the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the rise of Nazism, the establishment of Israel, and the rise of anti-Semitism in Arab countries. Hemshi, who had trained at the Milan Conservatory, returned to Anatolia and resolved to collect and notate as much Sephardic traditional music as possible.
