Since winning the BBC Young Musicians Competition in 1980, Nicholas Daniel has remained at the forefront of the international music scene. As a soloist, chamber musician, and conductor, he has performed with numerous international ensembles and orchestras, premiering and recording over 100 works. He is a founding member of the Britten Sinfonia, the Hafner Wind Ensemble, the Orsino Ensemble, and the Britten Oboe Quartet, and currently serves as a professor at the Trossingen University of Music and the Guildhall School of Music \u0026amp; Drama. In October 2020, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE), Fourth Class, in recognition of his achievements.\n\nThe legendary British oboist Léon Goossens (1897–1988; the younger brother of composer Eugène Goossens), influenced all five composers featured on this album; four of the pieces—excluding the one by Vaughan Williams—were composed for Goossens and premiered by him. It was also Léon Goossens who premiered Vaughan Williams’s Oboe Concerto. For this recording, Nicholas Daniel obtained special permission from Goossens’ daughter, Jenny, to perform Delius’s “Two Interludes” not on his own modern oboe, but on the precious instrument that once belonged to Goossens; he has also contributed a fascinating booklet essay on his experiences and the influence of playing this instrument.
