These works were composed during the transition from the late Romantic period to the modern era and are marked by a sombre tone, heavily influenced by the shadow of war. Although Shulhof’s work was composed earlier, its musical character is more modern and tinged with tragedy. Strauss’s “Metamorphosen” is a work in which he reflects on Berlin, devastated by World War II, while expressing his own feelings as he reached old age.
