Guest appearances by Maria Hita, Marisa Monchi, Beck, and Zapp Mama!
Seu Jorge, one of Brazil’s leading musicians and a rising star in acting, returns with the most ambitious project of his international career! Produced over the course of 16 years, *The Other Side* is a celebration of Brazilian music featuring a sophisticated orchestra that fuses jazz and bossa nova, setting it apart from the soul and samba that have characterized Seu Jorge’s solo career.

The catalyst for this album was Mario Cardoso Jr., a friend since 1999 who has long admired his music—a legendary producer known for his work with the Beastie Boys and Jack Johnson. In 2009, when he recorded Seu Jorge performing a simple arrangement of Kane & Abel’s “Girl You Move Me” on a nylon-string guitar, Cardoso was deeply moved by his incredibly delicate and dynamic performance. He immediately commissioned multi-instrumentalist and arranger Miguel Atwood-Ferguson to orchestrate the demo. Miguel Atwood-Ferguson states that the decadent orchestra, which envelops Seu Jorge’s velvety vocals—arguably his greatest charm—draws inspiration from the ECM catalog and the arrangements by Klaus Ogerman for the works of Tom Jobim and João Gilberto.

The repertoire and guest artists are also outstanding. The album opens with Milton Nascimento’s “Crenca” (from his 1969 debut album), followed by Artur Verocai’s “Caboclo” (a psychedelic guitar version!), and, of course, covers of songs like “Girl You Move Me” by the Canadian band Kane & Abel, who inspired this project. In a collaboration with American singer Beck—a self-proclaimed fan of Brazilian music and Grammy Award winner—they cover Nick Drake’s “River Man.” The guest appearance by diva Mariza Monchi on the new song “Quando Chego,” written by Seu Jorge, is truly refreshing. The highlight, however, is likely “Vento de Maio” by Telo & Márcio Borges. Although the song is best known as a hit by Ló Borges and, above all, Elis Regina, here you can hear a powerful duet with Maria Hita, Elis’s daughter.

Tracklisting:

1.Crenca
2.Vento De Maio feat Maria Rita
3.Girl You Move Me
4.Luz Na Escuridao
5.Caboclo
6.Folias De Amor
1.Quando Chego feat Marisa Monte
2.Flor De Laranjeira
3.River Man feat Beck
4.Far From The Sea feat Zap Mama
5.Beleza Barbara
