Conductor Steven Richman is a great admirer of Toscanini, and here he has curated a meticulously selected program sure to delight Toscanini enthusiasts. Rossini’s “William Tell” Overture and Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” Suite were favorites that Toscanini conducted countless times throughout his career. Bizet’s *Carmen* was one of Toscanini’s signature operas, and he also frequently conducted a suite of his own selection from it during his later years. Toscanini performed Waldteufel’s *Skaters* only twice, but on those occasions he arranged it for a full orchestra, and that version is used here. Verdi’s “Aida” Overture was composed for the European premiere in Milan on February 8, 1872—46 days after its world premiere in Cairo (December 24, 1871)—but it was a “phantom” piece that was shelved after Verdi himself decided not to use it. According to conventional wisdom, Toscanini borrowed the score from Verdi’s heirs; however, Harvey Sax, Toscanini examined Verdi’s autograph score during his tenure as music director at La Scala in the 1920s, and more than a decade later, he transcribed it from memory—a testament to his phenomenal memory—and conducted it. The Harmony Ensemble New York, conducted by Steven Richman, is wonderful in that it creates its own vibrant music—one that is not mere imitation—while exuding a deep admiration for Toscanini through its brisk and lively interpretation. Incidentally, Richman reportedly used the same baton that Toscanini had used.
Tobu Land System

Tracklisting:

.Aida: Overture
.Carmen Suite: Prelude to Act IV: Aragonaise
.Carmen Suite: Prelude to Act I
.Carmen Suite: Prelude to Act III: Intermezzo
.Carmen Suite: Prelude to Act II: Les Dragons d'Alcala
.Carmen Suite: March & Chorus Act IV: Les Toreadores
.Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a: Overture
.Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a: March
.Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a: Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy
.Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a: Trepak
.Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a: Arabian Dance
.Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a: Chinese Dance
.Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a: Dance of the Mirlitons
.Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a: Waltz of the Flowers
.Skaters Waltz
.William Tell Overture
