This production incorporates music from *Tamos, King of Egypt* throughout.\nDirector Peter Sellars has created a production that speaks powerfully to contemporary society by reimagining Sultan Soliman as a factory owner who employs foreign workers illegally. Lechina, a Russian, plays the role of Zayde, while Panicker, a Sri Lankan-American, plays Gomatz—both representing exploited workers. On the other hand, the factory management is portrayed by Walker as Alazim (from St. Louis), Thomas as Suleiman (from Miami), and Robinson as Osmin (from Atlanta)—all African Americans. This makes the situation easy to understand not only for Americans but also for people from other countries. The curtain falls with a quintet, leaving no happy ending but a profound aftertaste.\nThis footage was recorded as a film during a performance in Aix-en-Provence. Although it is an opera film, it is not a traditional dubbed production like those of the past; rather, it feels as though the camera followed the action right into the stage set during the live performance. Sellers’ incisive direction is masterfully captured through unrestricted camerawork. Conductor Langlet, who has earned a strong reputation in recent years as a Mozart conductor, shines here as well with his unambiguous and lucid musical interpretation.
