Not only did this recording mark the culmination of the complete symphony cycle that began in 2004, but given the significance of *Symphony No. 9* itself, the recording was approached with the utmost care. First, when the orchestra performed the piece as the opening piece at the 2008 Bonn Beethovenfest in the summer of 2008, the first three movements were recorded. Subsequently, in December 2008, when they performed “No. 9” again during a tour in Bremen and elsewhere in Germany, the fourth movement was recorded; on this occasion, they took nearly two sessions to carefully perfect the recitative section that precedes the vocal parts. Paavo and the Deutsches Kammerphilharmonie first performed this symphony in September 2005. This recording represents the culmination of their efforts, achieved through repeated performances in series in Yokohama, Lanadère, Canada, and Strasbourg, as well as numerous concerts throughout Germany, including in Bremen. The vocal ensemble—crucial to the fourth movement—features baritone Gerné, tenor Voigt, along with other leading soloists of the time and the German Kammerchor (founded in 2001; 11\/10\/8\/12 per part = 41 singers), resulting in a performance of the “Ninth” that sets a world-class standard.
