Kaufmann states, “French opera is a cherished repertoire that is close to my heart.” “These works reflect the spirit of an exceptionally distinctive era in the history of European culture. On this album, I’ve included not only works that represent the highlights of this era but also pieces that hold significant meaning in my career to date. Wilhelm Meister in *Mignon* was the first French opera I ever sang (at the Toulouse Opera in 2001), and my successes in *Carmen* and *Werther* greatly expanded my career as a singer. “I sang *Werther* for the very first time at the Paris Opera—being the only German in a French ensemble was a risky undertaking, but I drew great strength from my colleagues, the conductor, and above all, from the recording by the renowned French tenor, Georges Till’s recording,” he confesses, revealing that he is, quite literally, head over heels for French opera. Complete video recordings of *Carmen* and *Werther* have been released, and since his Decca debut album, *Romantic Arias* (2008), also includes arias from French operas, it is clear that he has had an affinity for this repertoire from the very beginning of his career.
