Along with the New Year's Concert, the \"Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert\" is one of the Vienna Philharmonic's most famous events and has become an established tradition of early summer in Vienna since its inception in 2004. The open-air concert, held at Schönbrunn Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is free of charge and open to 100,000 music fans, and is broadcast live (or recorded) to more than 60 countries around the world. The concert has featured a distinguished lineup of conductors, including Gergiev, Dudamel, Barenboim, Welser-Möst, Maazel, and last year, Eschenbach, as well as the pianist Lang Lang.Sony Classical has been releasing the \"Summer Night Concerts\" since 2013, and this year, 2015, the third edition, will feature Zubin Mehta, who also conducted the New Year's Concert at the beginning of the year. Since 2015 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sibelius, the program will feature works by Scandinavian composers, except for the fanfare by R. Strauss at the beginning of the program. The Vienna Philharmonic's recordings of Scandinavian works are extremely rare, with Nielsen's \"Masked Ball\" Overture and Sinding's \"Whispers of Spring\" being the first recordings by the orchestra, and Grieg's \"Peer Gynt\" Suite I and Sibelius' \"Finlandia\" being the first recordings by the orchestra in the 1960s. The Vienna Philharmonic has not made official recordings of these works in half a century, since the session recordings made by Karajan and Sargent in the 1960s.Under the direction of Mehta, who has now established the longest relationship with the Vienna Philharmonic of any active conductor, we can expect a performance on a grand scale. The soloist will be Rudolf Buchbinder, one of Vienna's most beloved and celebrated pianists, performing Grieg's Piano Concerto. Buchbinder is internationally acclaimed for his interpretation of German and Austrian piano works from Haydn to Brahms, but his repertoire is wide-ranging and includes Gershwin. Buchbinder has made frequent visits to Japan, and in 2013 he performed the complete Beethoven piano concertos with the Vienna Philharmonic, receiving rave reviews in various newspapers and magazines for his mature pianism. It will be interesting to see how Buchbinder, who is at the peak of his maturity, will perform Grieg's piano concertos, as this will be his first recording.
