Harpsichord makers continually refined their instruments to meet the diverse demands of various composers, and as a result, the French harpsichord underwent a unique evolution distinct from its Italian and German counterparts.
In addition to Mozart’s famous Sonata in A minor, this album features harpsichord works by four composers. All of these keyboard pieces were either written or published in Paris between the 1760s and 1770s and represent the works of the final generation of composers who played a pivotal role in the development of French clavichord music.
Hürmander, a native of Arras, was active in Paris and London and left behind 26 sonatas. Schober also composed numerous sonatas for the harpsichord; he became acquainted with Leopold Mozart, Mozart’s father, in Paris, and the young Mozart arranged Schober’s works into piano concertos. Although Taplé is best known for his organ concertos, his skill in crafting a set of variation pieces with striking musical effect from a theme in Rameau’s *Les Sauvages* is truly remarkable. Mozart’s Sonata in A minor is said to reflect the grief he felt upon the death of his mother while he was staying in Paris, having left his hometown of Salzburg in July 1778; it is performed on the assumption that Mozart composed it on the harpsichord at that time.

<julia nuti>
Born in Cambridge in 1976. He is a research fellow at the Swiss-Italian Conservatory in Lugano and a professor in the early music department at the Fiesole Conservatory.
Sony Music</julia>
